Dark Screens: Lost Cinemas of South London

Trocadero at Elephant and CastleWelcome to Dark Screens, a brief exploration in to the history of some of London's lost cinemas. Economics, war and redevelopment have caused the disappearance of dozens of cinemas in recent decades, but their memories linger on...

Initially, the site aims to cover Lambeth, Southwark and Wandsworth, but eventually - who knows? The areas are listed by Borough and Neighbourhood, more or less, so you may need to explore a little.

This is very much 'work in progress'. If you know any that we have missed out, or have extra information, please let me know. We would be delighted to add some of your old pictures, reminiscences and facts, with full acknowledgements where appropriate.

We will be adding articles and other resources, so this site can itself be of use to others with an interest in this fascinating area of architectural, entertainment and social history.
