About Dark Screens
This is very much a work in progress: the objective is to create a definitive listing of cinemas based in Lambeth and Southwark during the century or so that film has been on public display. Many records are incomplete or fragmentary, and there are other projects and programmes researching private displays and occasional perfomances in venues such as theatres and public halls. Our interest is mostly in purpose-built or converted cinemas, largely from an architectural interest.

Geographical Coverage
Initially this site is focused on the boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark and Wandsworth. We hope to expand that over time to other areas of South London. There may be some overlap of borders in the way we have described them - Clapham for example comes under both Lambeth (Clapham Common) and Wandsworth (Clapham Junction). If any geographical liberties cause outrage, just let me know and I'll try to amend the description accordingly.
I apologise in advance if the listings of resources and other links seem London-centric. Partly it is because that is where I live, partly of course because much of the development in public cinema happened here - I have added links to as many other regional and international sites as possible, so no-one feels too neglected - let me know if you would like a link to your site, or can suggest other useful resources for any part of this web site.
