Sources

To assist other researchers, and to encourage you to suggest new sources that I have not yet come across, here are the main sources of the facts and figures in my database:

First (but latest) is The London Project: The birth of the film business in London - I came across the database when my own list had reached 141 using the soruces below, and there are dozens here that I hadn't listed. However if you're starting, then start with the London Project as it is probably the most definitive listing available. My entries currently have more pictures, and some more descriptive details, but for a master listing, it's hard to beat. I assume they have all the other information too, it's just not yet publicly available, so worth keeping an eye on I expect. And of course it covers all of London, and suppliers and production companies as well as the venues. A lovely big database...

Bioscope Magazine (from the British Library Newspaper Collection at Colindale.)

Guides from Mercia Film Society

Southwark's Local History study centre

Lambeth's Landmark archive

The initials in brackets are the references used in the database, so that my facts can be checked. I haven't made any of this stuff up!

And sources I am aware of, but just haven't had time to get to yet:

BFI Archive
Kinematograph Year Books

Picture Sources

There are a number of online picture archives, and of course many more not online. Here are just a few to get you started:

Lambeth Council's Landmark Project: Landmark showcases the best 6,000 images from the Lambeth Archives collection of over 30,000 photographs, drawings, prints and water colours.

European Visual Archive: pictures from the London Metropolitan Archives and the Boroughs of London

Southwark Council Local Studies Library: not online as such, but many excellent local images

Odeon Cavalcade: Dozens of pictures - mostly in black and white - of Odeon cinemas from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s.
