Filming Locations

BritMovie: large and well-used forums discuss everything about British film. If you have a question, ask it here and the encyclopaedic knowledge of the members will leap in to action on your behalf!

ReelStreets: "A site devoted to British film locations, and places where films were made in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, in the years 1920's to 1980's". A £10 bounty is offered for photographs of locations...

IMDB Locations: the huge database includes brief location references, so you can at least get summary lists of locations used for a film, or films shot at a specific location.


Local History

Some Activities of Bermondsey Borough Council (1931).: summary and clip from a newsreel-style film, made from a compilation of previously made footage, to record the Council's various services and activities.

Twickenham: article on history of local cinemas from The Twickenham Museum.

Picture Palaces Past and Present: Ex-Chief Projectionist and Press Photographer David Freeman provides a sample of the 3,000+ cinema photographs he has taken from 1948 to the present day. His site lists the Colour or Black and White negatives available for reprints.

Brixton Then and Now has some excellent histories and pictures of lost local theatres and cinemas, amongst a large pictorial archive Brixton over the years.

Not always much to do with cinemas, but if you like classic functional buildings, there are a few sites you might enjoy as well.
Historic Theater Directory: 600 online historic theaters, cinemas, opera houses and preservation organizations in the United States and Canada. Comprehensive site organised state by state with hundreds of useful links in all areas ofhistoric building conservation. Includes This directory also lists 1,300 online preservation organizations, programs and historical societies in North America.
Classic Cafes: beautiful cafes from the 1950s and 1960s. Also a page or two about cafes in film, but mostly a tribute to the Italian-style cafe that made Soho so unique (although it covers cafes from all over the country and beyond...).
London Footprints: A very useful site if you're planning a stroll through some historic bits of London. An Art Deco walk is just one example among dozens of easy to follow routes. No pictures here - you'll need to get out and take your own! Also a long list of art deco buildings in London
