Journals
Major Collections
Individual Titles
A mixture of journals here - some specifically on Cinema History, some on general film interest, some on general architecture and local history. You may need to find a searchable index and request specific articles through an inter-library loan request, or through a visit to the British Library Newspaper Collection at Colindale, the BFI or even RIBA. That's the fun of research after all, doing the Sherlock Holmes bit...
Major Collections
British Library Newspapers: the national newspaper archive at Colindale, North London. They have a listing of British and Irish Cinema and Film Periodicals in the Newspaper Library (almost like they've been asked for these more than once!), and if you have the time and are able to get there, this is where you find out the story of everything - as long as you know when and where it was reported, at least.
The BFI National Library has a reading room where the archive collections can be consulted and researched. You can search the book catalogue before you go to save some time.
The M25 Consortium is a group of 52 university and other higher education institutions in and around the M25 who aim to widen access to their collections by enabling unified searches (in other words you can search ALL their catalogues in one go!). Whether or not you have access to the materials depends on your status (student, researcher, nobody) and their access rules (day passes, open access, no chance). It varies, but it's a starting point - you'd need to contact the relevant library to request access - some do allow day visitors to go in to look at materials, but not to borrow, for example.
RIBA (Royal Intitution of British Architects) has a huge collection of books, journals and above all images on all matters architectural. As with the Universities above, access may be very limited and subject to application and negotiation, but again their catalogue is searchable (and again the more detail you know before you start searching, the better your chances of success), so you can identify titles and issue numbers, and perhaps then try to find them elsewhere if you are not able to access them direct.
Individual Titles
Film History Index: Journals
Although apparently last updated in 2001, this page from the WWW Virtual Library Film History Index provides a useful list of journals covering the topic of film and cinema history. Only one or two dead links, otherwise an excellent set of international journal web sites.
The journals below are NOT in the listing at WWWVL.
European Cinema Journal
PDF versions of issues from 1999 onwards (and Italian versions in pdf also). Published by Media Salles, in conjunction with the EU Media Programme, this site also provides the European Cinema Yearbook, a section called the Cinema Research Library with much more in-depth information, particularly a 100 year history of cinema exhibition, broken down by country. All the publications and articles appear to be available both in italian and English.
HISTORICAL JOURNAL OF FILM, RADIO AND TELEVISION
Published four times a year the Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television is the leading international journal for media history. The journal examines the history of audio-visual media and its impact on the political, social and cultural developments of the twentieth century. The web site offers sample articles, and a full online index of articles (but not the full text).
